Esports football game GOALS introduces a new tournament for women in its community.
Esports football game GOALS has announced its first Women’s Community Cup, scheduled to begin on August 9th.
This 1v1 tournament offers players the chance to compete for a $2,500 (~£1,900) prize pool and aims to highlight GOALS’ commitment to supporting women in esports and encouraging a diverse range of talent.
GOALS was announced in 2021 and is currently in pre-alpha development. The playtest phase began in July 2024. The game, which has raised nearly $40 million (~£31.2 million) in funding, is described as “esports-ready” and includes both 1v1 and 5v5 game modes. Founded by Andreas Thorstensson, co-founder of SK Gaming, GOALS has recently bolstered its leadership team with the addition of Ebba Ljungerud (formerly of Paradox Interactive) and Oskar Gabrielson (formerly of EA DICE).
In addition to the Women’s Community Cup, GOALS plans to host at least two women’s community tournaments annually, offer women-only playtesting, and create a dedicated women’s Discord server. Players can sign up for the tournament through the Battlefy platform.
The esports landscape for football games has evolved recently, with EA FC wrapping up its inaugural esports season and FIFAe branching out into Rocket League and Football Manager tournaments.
