Exploring Lisbon: The Intersection of Football and Gaming — A Creator’s Perspective

Ahead of ESI Events’ flagship conference, ESI Lisbon (September 23rd-25th), this article delves into the intersection of football and gaming.

The involvement of footballers in esports has been ongoing since at least 2018, with notable examples including Dutch footballer Ruud Gullit launching Team Gullit. However, the trend gained significant momentum during the pandemic years. In 2020, several high-profile footballers ventured into esports: English footballer David Beckham became a co-owner of Guild Esports, Argentinian star Sergio Agüero founded KRÜ Esports, Brazilian player Casemiro launched Case Esports, Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois invested in DUX Gaming, and Spanish footballer César Azpilicueta created the Spanish organization Falcons.

The surge in footballers entering the esports space during the pandemic was largely driven by the suspension of traditional sports, presenting an opportunity to tap into the growing esports market. While some ventures, like Ellevens Esports, did not achieve lasting success, the influence of footballers in esports remains evident today.
