University of Salford’s Business School introduces a new esports facility
The University of Salford’s Business School has introduced a new esports facility, the Esports Lab, in preparation for the 2024/25 academic year.
The Esports Lab is designed to enhance the learning experience for students enrolled in the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Esports Business Management. The facility is equipped for tournament play, features a range of broadcasting equipment, and includes a dedicated learning suite. It also boasts high-end gaming PCs and a Formula One (F1) licensed racing simulator.
The HND in Esports Business Management, which began in 2023, offers students a comprehensive understanding of the esports industry. The program includes collaboration with industry partners such as the Manchester-based esports agency Horizon Union and provides a work placement as part of the curriculum. The course emphasizes both the practical and ethical aspects of the esports sector.
Founded in 1850, the University of Salford currently has about 21,500 students. Notable alumni include comedian Peter Kay and esports host OJ Borg.
This development is part of a broader trend among UK universities investing in esports, following recent initiatives like the University of West London’s new degrees and the University of Suffolk’s planned esports undergraduate course for 2025.
Iain Earle, Program Leader for Esports Business Management at Salford Business School, commented: “Esports is a rapidly evolving field, and our new lab, equipped with the latest technology, represents a significant investment in enhancing the student experience. We aim to provide our students with access to industry-standard equipment, preparing them thoroughly for their future careers in this dynamic sector.”
